Some things...

Busy, busy, busy!

That's what life is like for me at the moment.  What about you?  In my part of the world we're into that last stretch of school before the 'big' holidays, the long weeks of summer and suddenly there seems like there's just so much I need to do before those weeks begin.

There's always that adjustment period at the start of the holidays, when both me and Little Miss take a little while to settle into the new routine.  I miss the freedom of just being able to get on with what I need to do uninterrupted and she misses the constant occupation that school provides.

We find our way after a while of course, she starts to find ways to keep herself amused without needing my constant input so I can get the jobs done and I manage to find a way to sneak a little crafty joy in while she's playing at a friend's or on an outing with Nanny and Grandad maybe.  But I confess I do feel a little bit of trepidation when I know the big break is coming.  I hope I'm not alone in that!

Anyway, let me fill you in on the few things that are keeping me going at the moment...

 Crochet Corner

Oh I'm so glad you approve of my new little corner!
At least, if you didn't, you were polite enough to keep quiet about it and I bless you for that.  The response has been fabulous and I've already received so many wonderful suggestions in the inbox, which is really great.  I'm so happy that you like how things are shaping up so far and I'm grateful you've taken the time to let me know your thoughts.

I'm going to be adding more content in the coming weeks, but there's plenty that still needs re-jigging and re-working to do behind the scenes, so you might find things look a bit funny from time to time.  Fear not though, it should all mean a better site at the end of it.

(By the way, the picture above has nothing much to do with Crochet Corner, apart from the fact that it's crochet obviously.  But it's pretty crochet, so I thought I'd pop it on in there.)

Sun

Hooray, at last the sun has his hat on and has come out to play!

At least he has here.  I hope he's shown his face where you are in the world too?  It's been a pure joy this week though to be outside again and go to parks again and not be wet and miserable.  Fingers crossed it stays for the weekend, pretty please?

The right knitting

I've started a new knit.  I'm a little fickle when it comes to knitting lately.  I do much less of it these days and I like it because I find it more soothing and relaxing when I'm busy but it has to be the right kind of knitting.  Nothing too complicated, nothing too fussy.  Monotonous is the key word for my maximum enjoyment right now.

There is a little bit of pattern at the start of this cardigan I'm making for The Child, but I can handle that as it's new and I'm excited but soon I'll be on to rows and rows of gloriously boring stocking stitch - fabulous.

  1. Yes, the looming summer holidays! I part dread them & part rejoice in their approach. It is lovely once everyone settles down into the more relaxed daily routine - no morning rush, no uniforms to wash & iron, no clock-watching. This year, I am approaching the summer hols with a little more trepidation than usual, as baby #3 due tomorrow, which means I'll have a newborn & my 6.5yr old & 4yr old boys to entertain all summer!! Hubby is hoping to delay most of his paternity until then so that he can help entertain them!

Loved crochet corner, as I am still new to crochet, so found th tutorials really useful.

  2. Your flower squares are looking gorgeous, as is your knitting in that lovely shade, Sandra, and I absolutely understand your slight apprehension as school holidays approach - adjusting always takes time and it can be rather difficult to find your daily routine has changed considerably! My husband has been retired for years now and I'm still adjusting to an ever-present 'other person' (oh yes, I do love him!) around the place and loss of control of the running of our home - but it is very nice now to have his help, especially with the heavy jobs around the place - there's always a consolation, haha! I wish you and your Little Miss lots of happy times! xoJoy

  4. Ohh with 3 boys I know exactly how you feel. I am trying plan one thing a week. Museum, seaside, castle, etc. I make them come for a walk with me to take the dogs each day but that's the only real structure we have.

The knitting looks great. Did you know it's national knit in public day today?

  5. I do love your flower squares too, in fact, the picture that you took of one of them and posted on Instagram was actually what led me to (and made me fall in love with) your blog. Any chance you might share the pattern any time soon? Thanks!

  6. I must cast my vote as well. Please show us more photos of those beautiful flower squares. The colors and design are gorgeous.

  7. I hope that the summer holidays go well for you! I expect that you will fit in some crafting time here and there when you are out and about or at home. How exciting that crochet corner was so well received, I for one loved it and am definitely look forward to reading more and being able to refer to your site as and when I have questions - frequently!! - about crochet. Thank you so very much for this!! xx

  8. Yes, me too! I agree, it’s nice to not have the morning rush for a while but yes, you are going to be busy with a little one on the way too. This is hopefully where your 6 and 4yr learn how to play together really nicely so you can care for the newborn! It’ll be nice to have Hubs on hand though, a bit of a life-saver in fact I’m sure. Congratulations for number 3, I hope everything goes well for you.

  9. Thanks so much Joy! :) Although I’m not near the retirement stage yet, I definitely know what you mean. My Hubs works from home part of the week quite often and sweet darling though he is, it’s a bit of a pain. Quite frankly I’m used to having the place to myself! He now has a separate office area in the garden, so that’s helped a lot and of course, it’s an easy commute for him so at least he’s home at a reasonable hour - so as you say, silver linings… ;)

  10. The school holidays are certainly knocking on the door now, and I have an added thing to worry about, GCSE results! Yes, Mr Teen has three more exams and then finishes school forever! So the summer holidays will be the waiting game for results and then the impending worry on whether the college will accept him! Scary routines ahead!

  11. I knit late at night and it has to be so incredibly simple for me to manage it at that time. It's all I can do to stay awake sometimes! The cardigan is looking good, no doubt The Child will love it. I hope you have a good Sunday, CJ xx

  13. I know what you mean about holidays, I feel similar trepidation and I have big kids (17 and 14!). I love the break from routine but I also miss the routine! Love your crochet corner, it is such a wonderful resource especially for sometime crochet people like me who need some helpful reminders :) xx

  14. Just wanted to add that I love Crochet Corner. I am fairly new to crochet so having a website to refer to like this is marvellous.

  15. No, you are not alone! The school vacation always feel a bit hard to get started realizing I am loosing my alone time and don't get time to progress in all the projects I want to do. But I agree with you, after a while you get into it and it is kind of nice not having any times to adjust to. I have one 1.5y, one 2.5y and one 5y, it is busy, but at least they play better this year than last year. I am trying to bring my knitting or crochet to sit with them while they are playing. Works good sometimes.

  16. That’s a very good idea actually, a little bit of structure like that is probably a good plan. Gives you something to do but leaves things nice and flexible too, just right really.
I didn’t know about knitting in public day and now I’ve missed it! Bother. Oh well, I did knit at my sister’s house, does that count I wonder?

  17. Thank you so much and I’m so glad to have you here too! Yes, those flowers will be coming, eventually, I’m afraid they are not progressing very fast at the moment but I love them so there’s no chance of them being forgotten!

  18. Thanks Amy, I’m sure it’ll be great once we get ourselves sorted. There’s always our holiday to look forward to as well, so that’s good. So glad you like my crochet corner by the way! :)

  19. Oh yes, I didn’t even think of that side of it. Most of the people I know with older children have passed that stage now and the younger ones aren’t there yet. A nerve wracking time! Good luck for Mr Teen’s results then, fingers croseed he gets want he wanted!

  22. I’m glad I’m not the only one but on the other hand, you’re supposed to tell me it all gets easier by that age! ;) Oh well, we’ll both muddle through no doubt!

  23. Oh my, you will be busy with 3 children at such young ages, I guess I have it easy after all! Well, I hope they get better at playing with each other this year even more. It’s great that they at least have built in playmates and if it means that you can fit a little crafting in while they are happy then everything is good!

  24. Cherish and enjoy the freedom of summer holidays with your child. The waking up late, doing anything you feel like, the non conformity of pleasurable long days. Be selfish. Be free. Be happy. Be together. Before they have disappeared forever.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You know what, you are absolutely right. I’ll take your advice and make the most of us being together, that’s what it’s all about after all. Thank you!

  26. I do love the stitch corner and although I haven't used it yet...it's so nice to know it's there! Our weather here is gorgeous but hot and humid and if you sat in the grass like you did you would get ticks and chiggers. LOL! But glad you are enjoying it. I'm landscaping this summer so yesterday I unloaded 6 bags of river rock and I feel it today.
I am so like you with the knitting.....I love the boring bits! LOL! I always love your choice of yarns and colors. TTYL!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well I don’t know what chiggers are, but ticks would be bad enough to stop me putting my bum anywhere near the grass around your way! Luckily there’s nothing too bad around here to get me, the odd thistle perhaps, but I’m prepared to brave it. Good luck with the landscaping, 6 bags of river rock you say? That’s some workout!

  28. It is so lovely to be crocheting outside again. Though not today, rain forced me back inside. Pretty crochet - look forward to seeing more!
