Linden Bee Shawl

I'm very excited to share this one with you today, because it's a bit of a new favourite for me.

It's a pattern I've been talking about for a while and so that's another reason why it's good to get it out into the world.  I'm always seeming to make you wait for these things.  I guess I should be better at keeping things under my hat until they are ready, but it seems that's not my style!

Anyway, let me tell you why I'm loving this Linden Bee shawl so much.  First of all because it's quite a straight forward one to make, there's quite a small pattern repeat and once you are up and going, it's nice and easy to remember.  So that means it's nice a quick too.  It's also got my favourite type of shape for shawls at the moment.  It's a triangle, but a nice shallow and elongated one, so keeps the neck all cozy but doesn't hang too low.

And best of all, it's got some scope for some fab colour play.  You need about 2 hanks worth of fingering weight for this and it's got some nicely spaced striping in there which means you have lots of lovely options when it comes to picking yarn.

For my original one (the paler, white one), I used a hank of Stranded Yarns as the main colour and then a precious gradient mini set from Easy Knits to create some nice faded stripes.  Then for my second, I alternated two utterly gorgeous hanks of Twinkle yarn by Hill View Farm.  It also looks fab when it's made up in just one colour, but I also really like the idea of having some fun with different colour stripes and maybe even making a scrappy mini skein version.

That's the other thing I love about this shawl, I'm seeing 'Linden Bee' colour combos everywhere I look.  I sorted my stash the other day and so many hanks would just sit so nicely together in this shawl.  It's so tempting to make half a dozen of them!  And, surprisingly, I actually want to.  Normally I'm not a huge fan of re-making patterns, once I'm done, that's usually it for me.  But with this one, I just keep seeing more I want to do.

My original version has a special place in my heart though.  I love the subtle changes in the stripes and the way the depth of colour fades in and out.  I've written the details of that into the pattern, in case you want to re-create that idea.

The colours also played a part in the naming of this particular shawl.  The pattern itself reminds me of honeycomb shapes, which got me thinking about bees and honey.  Then pale colours of the yarn made me wonder about different types of honey and a little bit of research revealed that honey does indeed come in different shades, depending on the bee and the nectar used.  Linden honey, made when a large proportion of Linden Tree nectar is used, is know for it's 'white' colour.  Well, what could be more perfect?  The Linden Bee Shawl seemed to fit rather nicely.
