Whoosh!

Thats where the holidays have gone for me.  Flying by in a speedy whoosh and now, already, they are over.

With the exception of our holiday in France, which was a delightfully relaxing break, we seem to have been busy, busy busy.  We weren't back long from France when Little Miss had a mini holiday at Nannie and Grandad's to prepare for.  Home from that and there was a birthday on the horizon.

She's 8 now.  That's another 'whoosh' moment right there.  That first year of hers went slow.  It was a hard year for me.  I had a lots of doubts and uncertainty.  It didn't come naturally, as they said it would.  I learnt of course but that took time.  The second year, as soon as she turned 1 and we could communicate with words or even gestures everything became simple, I found my feet, I found my way and I felt like a real Mummy at last.  Since that first year, we've flown and time has flown.

Being 8 is about Lego, it's about camping in the garden, it's about pretty pink and purple girlie glitter but also about Superman, comics and Starwars.  It's about splashing and water slides, cartoons, xbox games, cuddling treasured fluffy toys,  singing made up songs out loud because you're totally engrossed in your imagined universe and most certainly about Hello Kitty.  8 is a very good age.

It's also, I think, a very good age for a trip to the magical land of Disney.  So we went there too.

It was a little bit of an impromptu decision really.  We've been saving up to do 'the Disney trip' for a while, not sure if it'll be a big American extravaganza or a slightly more local European trip.  As much as Hubs and I love and adore the good ol' US of A and are dying for a reason to go back, we decided that much of what is there to see and do would be wasted on our quiet, cautious and timid little girl.  Much better to put that trip back for a while.

So Disneyland Paris was our destination and it did not disappoint.  It has grown since I was last there, a frightening amount of years ago.  There is a whole other park now, 'Disneyland Studios' and between the two we filled our three and a half days of park time easily.  We did an awful lot of it, but not all and could have filled more days if it wasn't for the fact we were all so shattered.  It is fabulous visiting magical kingdoms.  Fabulous fun, but also fabulously exhausting and fabulously expensive.  I hope though, it'll be a fabulous memory for her too.

...

Oh, I was going to tell you about that picture at the top too, the yarn candy I popped in just to suck you into reading this post!  I had a little day of experimentation and crochet play yesterday and those were some of my toys.  Well, now that school is back I felt the need to take a well earned rest, put my feet up and enjoy and indulgent day of leisure and hooky time.

Now that the holidays are over I could use a break.

  4. Time does indeed fly by. Our little princess started school last week and I went to pick her up yesterday and out she came with her little schoolbag and little lunch box and my heart dropped a little because our special time together has come to an end for the sake of school days and she also has Disneyland Paris to look forward to in the Autumn Break so I won't get to see her for that either! Happy Belated Birthday to your princess.x Your hooky stuff looks interesting.

  7. The holidays certainly went quickly and my two teenagers heights have whooshed as well as their years. Luckily the school uniforms were bought at the end! Motherhood didn't come to me easily at the start, however I couldn't live without my great kids now. Happy birthday to your little one xx

  9. Looks like you had a busy holiday time, but one to be treasured!
Ok, not sure if this will get through, leaving a comment seems to be a major event....I may just have to listed as guest now ???

  10. Don't worry, your comment came through beautifully and thank you very much for it too! :D It was a good holiday, lots to enjoy which is good.
You are a guest by the way, but I think you only stop being one of those if you sign up to 'Disqus' - that's who my comments go through - and I would imagine you have no particular reason for wanting to do that! But most people who leave me comments stay that way and being a guest works just fine so it's all good!

  11. 8 years old is a perfect time to go to Disney, so is 43 which is my age! I cry when I hear the Disney parade song and get giddy with excitement if I spot Daisy Duck - oh and the Small, small world boat trip... want to go again but it IS very expensive (especially as there are 6 of us!). As far as children growing up..when my daughter was about 9 or 10 (she's now 15) she sung Slipping through my fingers by Abba at a school concert, now every time i| hear that song (when we watch Mama Mia) I get so emotional, the words feel so true. Oh my goodness, I best bury myself in some crochet books and pull myself together before I start to blubber!! take care, Sam xx PS love your photo mosaics x

  16. Since the summer there's an 8 year old roaming our house too. And since this monday there is a (still have to turn 6) sister around who started elementary school! Homework times two. No more little ones.... They are each others best friends and at this age they play together for hours on end without even a hint of arguments. And what is best of all are the 'grown up' conversations they have amongst each other that you overhear from time to time..... they always crack me up! I do not recall how they got to this age so fast but now they're here, it's a great age.

Time flies and one can only fly along I'm afraid :)

  17. Your little girl sounds just like mine was at 8, quiet, contented and not all that brave. We never got to Disneyland but she finally went with school when she was 12 and loved it, although she's still not brave enough for some of the more scary rides!
It was a lovely warm reminder of my daughter's earlier years reading your blog. I love your style and your lovely projects. You are a talented lady and I just want to say thanks for sharing so much with us.

  18. Happy birthday to Miss 8 ... it's one of the best ages I reckon, along with 9, 10 and 17. Scarily my four are now all at least 20, and even though I started my family young that makes me feel ancient ... whoosh and they'll all be 30 something ... I'd best not blink!

  19. My oldest will soon be seven and I just can't figure that out. When did that happen?!

  20. Clever girl... Twink! A crochet pic to suck us in... Ha ha ha! You really know our soft spots. I'm with you. I need a break. Now when holidays are over and we are back into routine I desperately need a break... I'm exhausted. How is that possible? We are supposed to have vacation to relax, right? Well well. no complaints though. It has been lovely. I can see you had a lovely time too. I am curious about this Disney World thingy... Hmmm. Our kids hardly know about it... Actually I would like to go to Willy Wonka land. But I don't think there is such a thing available yet. Or Legoland. That would be great fun. A warm happy birthday to your girl. 8 is a wonderful age.

  21. Happy birthday little princess! My son is nine and I absolutely LOVE this age! Your Hello Kitty cake is adorable. I took my eldest daughter - now 17, (now how did that happen, - to Disney Paris when I lived there when she was little. It was so, so clean and friendly. I thought we learned the art of patience in the pretty long queues though. Was it the same for you?

  22. You had me at "whoosh"! You're right, everything seems to be happening at breakneck speed and I'm not sure I like it very much!

Eight is such a gorgeous age and, yes, perfect for Disneyland Paris. I'm pretty sure my son was a similar age when we last went (gulp, six years ago). There was a large Sully wandering around, mingling with the crowds, when we were there too and Sam hid behind me in fright!

Loving the look of your flower/butterfly(?) crochet squares you tease!!! ;-)

    Hxx

PS. I could give you a big squeezy hug for being so wonderfully honest. It's not easy having a baby and is definitely a bit of a shock to the system - particularly the first time around. I think I got my wobbles out of the way when I was pregnant - I was absolutely foul - an hormonal heap from start to finish. I'm sure we're not the only ones to have struggled at some point. xxx

  23. You could use a break after the holidays...oh yes, me too! I know that feeling. Happy Birthday to your Little Miss. My Bella is 7 this Christmas and I feel like it's all happening much too fast and I want to slow down. I found the the first year of motherhood awful, just plain awful, I was so bored and lonely and unhappy. Now, 6 years on, I look back on these last years as the happiest of my life and find that I'm rather happy at home and not exactly desperate (to put it mildly!) to go back to work. Disneyland Paris looks like a lot of fun though, that's on our list of places we'd like to take the kids. x

  24. Love the yarn and the color combination is justerfect. Disneyland sounds like a fun place and in Paris ??! That is just in plans for us right now...

  25. Oh Sandra - I know how you feel - my little lady turned 8 last week and time has completely flown by. Your pictures made me smile because they are so close to the ones on my camera!! Lego was the gift of choice in our house - of all kinds!! Great fun! Happy birthday to the big girl!! J9 x
