Eleanor

After my unsuccessful deliberation over what to do with the Noro yarn I got recently I was left in desperate need of some other reason to test drive the sleek Lantern Moon needles I got at the same time.  The answer was this gorgeous cowl pattern in some of the most wonderfully buttery soft yarn that I got on a birthday trip to Loop earlier this year.

I seem to using knitting more as a way to relax lately.  I can get a little fanatical about my crochet projects and so, when I really want to unwind and let the stress melt away, I'm finding knitting is the perfect thing to do.  So I was originally looking out for a simple pattern, something soothing, maybe just a tad mind numbing.  But what I found and then couldn't resist, was Eleanor by Audrey Knight. (Rav link)

Apart from looking lovely, it looks fabulously complicated but actually I still found it to be a relaxing knit.  It's clearly charted out for one thing, but it's one of the those patterns that has a rhythm to it, so you can tell where you are and what you should be doing next.  I really enjoyed it.

It helped that the yarn was some of the scrummiest yarn it's been my pleasure to use in a long time.   (Madelinetosh Merino DK - just in case you were wondering) It was one of those, 'I don't know what it's for but I have to have it' type purchases.  Which, as it was part of a special birthday trip and visit to Loop, I hope I can be excused for.

I hope it'll be a great choice for a cowl though as it's one of those yarns you just want to smoosh your face into as soon as you touch it.  (I'm not the only one who gets that urge... right?)  Anyway, I'm thinking that having it snuggled around my neck this winter will be a real treat.

Not such an easy one to get a shot of though.  Especially not a 'showing the cowl clearly but not having me in it' type of shot, which is my normal preference, so I've had to resort to a 'selfie' I'm afraid.... scroll down if you dare!

  2. I love the first photo - the heart shape draws focus to the ball of lush yarn and then allows you to wander off to discover a new love , the intricate and delicate work that the yarn has become.
Lovely focus on your work in the third photo
A very lovely cowl and beautifully executed

  3. You look lovely in the cowl, it is nice to see your lovely face. I know someone who has an Eleanor. The only problem they found is that it is charted and they had to write it out first. I would need to do the same. I find crochet charts helpful as they are very visual whereas knitting charts are a lot of work and don't work in the same way at all, I can't visualise from them at all! Written instructions all the way! The yarn looks very soft and pretty and the lace pattern is lovely. I enjoy knitting lace. I find knitting and crochet equally relaxing I think but I 'understand' crochet a lot more. Of course both of them can lead to a fit of bad temper when they go wrong!

  7. What a beautiful project and the colour is very pretty too. I will check out the pattern to see if I think I can make one for myself as I do tend to shy away from complicated patterns in case I get lost. It's nice to see your face in the photos too :)

  9. That's a beautiful cowl! Your description of how well it's charted and that it's easy to figure out where you're at and what comes next makes it sound do-able for an intricate-knit-challenged person like me. I would love to knit things more intricate like that but have had such trouble in the past. Yarn overs are the worst! But, this intrigues me! Enjoy! It looks great on you! And...P.S. I'm the same way....always trying to get pics of projects without having to resort to a selfie. Yours worked out great! Have a wonderful weekend!

  10. It's a lovely selfie! And a very lovely pattern - how beautifully it blocked up. I know what you mean about yarn you want to smoosh your face into ... we stumbled upon a Fall Festival last weekend, and one of the vendors was a local alpaca grower selling skeins of yarn from their animals. The softest stuff you ever felt, and I smooshed my face into several skeins before buying one. I wish I could have bought them all. :)

  17. I know that feeling of wanting to smoosh your face into yarn. I bought some ridiculously expensive silk, cashmere yarn at the Handmade Fair for that exact same reason, it was gorgeous and I couldn't put it down!
The cowl is lovely and you look good in it!

  20. Hello you! That last portrait shot is lovely, and you look just as I'd imagined from all the glimpses of you you've allowed us previously.

And the cowl looks great. I am itching to be knitting properly again but my favourite craft is still forbidden by my doc, just as soon as I can I'll be giving this pattern a try.
